# Troubleshoot hardware

> Fix common problems with the Driver, devices, and tasks.

Find the message or symptom that you see, then follow its fix. Each command runs from the [command palette](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/get-started/ui-overview#search-and-command-palette). Some problems show only in the log. In Synnax Desktop, run the “Show logs” command to open it. For problems with one integration, see the troubleshooting section on its pages.

## Restart the Driver

Many fixes end with a Driver restart. How you restart it depends on where it runs:

* **Synnax Desktop** -> run the “Restart Synnax” command.
* **The embedded Driver of a Core** -> restart the Core.
* **A standalone Driver** -> run `sudo synnax-driver restart` on Linux, or see [install the Driver](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/enterprise/driver/install).

## The Driver

### `Driver not running`

* Cause

  The Core has not heard from the Driver for a few seconds. The Driver shows this warning in the devices toolbar. A task on that Driver shows the same message when you start or stop it.

* Fix

  1. [Restart the Driver](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware/troubleshooting#restart-the-driver).
  2. Wait for the Driver status to change to “Driver is running”.

  Enterprise

  For a standalone Driver, make sure that the Driver runs on its computer and can reach the Core. See [install the Driver](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/enterprise/driver/install).

### `No response to the start command`

* Cause

  The Driver did not answer the command in 10 seconds. The Driver is running, but the device takes too long to start or stop. After 60 seconds, the Driver gives up and the status changes to “Failed to complete task operation”. The Driver does not run a new command for the task until the old command ends, so starting the task again does not help.

* Fix

  1. Check the cable, power, and network of the device.
  2. [Restart the Driver](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware/troubleshooting#restart-the-driver).
  3. Start the task again.

  If the status is “Driver not running” instead, see [the Driver is not running](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware/troubleshooting#driver-not-running).

### `No integration on this Driver handles task type ...`

Enterprise

* Cause

  The Driver that holds the task does not run the integration of the task, for example a Modbus task on a Driver on NI Linux RT. When you start the task, it shows “Failed to configure task”, with this text in the description. A task stays on the Driver of its device.

* Fix

  1. Connect the device again, with **Connect from** set to a Driver that runs the integration. See [supported integrations](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware#supported-integrations).
  2. Create the task again on the new device.

## Devices

### A device does not show in the devices toolbar

* Cause

  The Driver skips the device, cannot use it, or does not look for it. A task with no device to select shows “No devices connected” in its device list.

* Fix

  * **NI device** -> the Driver skips a device that has no name in NI MAX. Give the device a name in NI MAX. The Driver also skips CompactRIO controllers, but it finds the modules in them.
  * **Vendor software** -> NI devices need NI-DAQmx, LabJack devices need LJM, and EtherCAT on Windows needs Npcap. See the setup page of the integration. Install the software, then [restart the Driver](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware/troubleshooting#restart-the-driver).
  * **Operating system** -> NI devices do not work on macOS. LabJack devices work on Windows and macOS only. See [supported integrations](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware#supported-integrations).
  * **LabJack on the network** -> the Driver can take about a minute to find it.
  * **Modbus, OPC UA, and HTTP** -> the Driver does not look for these devices. Connect them by hand. See [how devices get into Synnax](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware/devices#how-devices-get-into-synnax).

### `Device disconnected`

* Cause

  The Driver no longer finds a device that it found before.

* Fix

  1. Check the cable, power, and network of the device.
  2. Wait for the next scan. The status changes back to “Device present”.

### `Failed to reach device` or `Failed to reach server`

* Cause

  The Driver cannot connect to a Modbus, OPC UA, or HTTP device.

* Fix

  1. Make sure that the device is on and on the same network as the Driver.
  2. Right-click the device in the devices toolbar and select **Edit connection**.
  3. Check the address and port, then click **Connect**.

## Tasks

### A task says the libraries are not installed

* Cause

  The Driver cannot load the vendor libraries. The task shows “Failed to create task”, and the description says that the NI-DAQmx and System Configuration libraries or the LabJack LJM libraries are not installed on this system. This status shows for a task that you imported, or after the software was removed. NI tasks never work on macOS, and LabJack tasks never work on Linux.

* Fix

  1. Install NI-DAQmx or LJM.
  2. [Restart the Driver](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware/troubleshooting#restart-the-driver).
  3. Start the task again.

### A task says its device is not configured

* Cause

  The device of the task is not configured yet. The task tab shows “… is not configured”.

* Fix

  Click **Configure …** in the message, and follow the steps in the dialog.

### Values show on a plot but are not stored

* Cause

  The task has **Data saving** off.

* Fix

  Turn on **Data saving** in the task tab. See [data saving](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware/tasks#data-saving).

### A running task ignores your edits

* Cause

  The task keeps its old configuration until you redeploy it.

* Fix

  Redeploy the task. See [apply edits to a running task](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/hardware/start-and-stop-tasks#apply-edits-to-a-running-task).

### A write task does not change the output

* Cause

  Another writer, such as a schematic or an Arc automation, controls the command channel. It has a higher authority, or the same authority and it opened first.

* Fix

  Release control in that writer, or give your writer a higher authority. See [control authority](https://docs.synnaxlabs.com/reference/control/authority).
