Dewesoft devices

Connect Dewesoft IOLITE and SIRIUS devices to the Driver over EtherCAT.

Dewesoft IOLITE and SIRIUS devices with an EtherCAT port connect to the Driver as EtherCAT modules. Each module shows in the devices toolbar, and read and write tasks use its PDOs as they use the PDOs of other modules. To connect the network, see Configure an EtherCAT device.

You set the amplifiers of a device in DewesoftX, such as the range, the excitation, and the sample rate. Synnax does not change these settings.

Tested models

Synnax Labs tested these models with the built-in master on Windows:

Model Sync mode tested
IOLITE GATE (firmware 2.00) DC sync
IOLITE 6xSTG DC sync
IOLITEr 32xDO DC sync

Other IOLITE and SIRIUS models with an EtherCAT port can also work. The Driver reads their PDOs from the module or from its built-in catalog of Dewesoft modules.

Connect the device

A Dewesoft device runs in one of two setups. Each module stores its setup.

  • Standalone -> Only Synnax gets the data. Connect the port of the Driver to EtherCAT bus 1 IN on an IOLITE, or to EtherCAT IN on a SIRIUS.
  • Dual -> DewesoftX and Synnax both get the data. On an IOLITE, connect DewesoftX to EtherCAT bus 1 IN and the Driver to EtherCAT bus 2 IN. On a SIRIUS, connect DewesoftX to the USB port and the Driver to EtherCAT IN.

In dual mode, one converter gives the data to both systems, and DewesoftX sets its sample rate. The data on the Driver’s bus gets no added anti-aliasing filter, so a network that cycles slower than the sample rate can show aliases.

Set up the device in DewesoftX

  1. Connect the device to DewesoftX and set its amplifiers and sample rate.
  2. Set the setup and the sync mode of each module. The Dewesoft manual for third-party EtherCAT masters gives the settings of each model.
  3. Store the settings in the device with Set power on default, then disconnect DewesoftX and turn the power of the device off and on again.

The device loads the stored settings each time it starts.

Match the sync mode

Each module runs the sync mode that it stores, SM sync or DC sync. The Driver must run the module in the same mode. If the modes are different, the module can stay in PRE-OP, for example with “Invalid DC SYNC configuration”. By default, the Driver runs SM sync when the module lists an SM sync mode.

In standalone mode, most IOLITE modules run only DC sync. The 6xSTG, 8xLV, and 8xTH can also run SM sync on bus 1. To run a module in DC sync:

  1. In the devices toolbar, right-click the module and select Configure.
  2. Under Sync mode, select the DC sync mode of the module.
  3. Enter the SYNC0 cycle and SYNC1 cycle from the table of the model in the Dewesoft manual. For example, a standalone 6xSTG in DC sync uses a SYNC0 cycle of 1 µs and a SYNC1 cycle of 1 s.
  4. Click Save, then stop every task on the port and start them again.

Some modules list one DC sync mode for each bus, such as DC-bus1 and DC-bus2 on the IOLITE GATE. Select the mode for the bus that the Driver connects to. A mode for the other bus refuses SAFE-OP with “Invalid DC SYNC configuration”.

Run DewesoftX and Synnax on one computer

With an IOLITE, connect DewesoftX and the Driver to different Ethernet ports. A SIRIUS connects DewesoftX through USB, so the Driver needs only one Ethernet port.

DewesoftX adds a network filter to each Ethernet port. The filter blocks the Driver, also when DewesoftX is closed. Turn off the filter on the port of the Driver. If DewesoftX uses an Ethernet port, keep the filter on that port.
